Sulfonylureas are drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes. They lower blood sugar by causing the pancreas to produce insulin (a natural substance that is needed to break down sugar in the body) and helping the body use insulin efficiently.
Sulfonylureas are broken down in the body by an enzyme called CYP2C9 which is encoded by the CYP2C9 gene. Mutations in this gene can lead to reduced ability to clear sulfonylurea drugs from the body.
